About

American troops spent a harsh winter in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, during which there was a shortage of suitable clothing and food for the soldiers. General Washington experienced doubts as a leader and one who could claim victory in the American Revolution. This engraving depicts Washington in prayer, perhaps asking for strength and guidance during one his lowest points in the war. In the background, a group of soldiers and horses are seen huddled around a fire, illustrating the unfavorable cold conditions.
