About
The procession that took place on March 3rd, 1913 in Washington D.C. in the name of women’s suffrage was an extravagant and well-attended event that captured the nation’s attention on this important issue. Dale’s print to advertise the event does not depict contemporary dress at the time, but rather a woman dressed as a medieval herald, riding through the procession on horseback and in feudal garb. Therefore, this image subverts traditional gender roles both in the sense that this woman is dressed for a traditionally male job, but also because the procession called for a right given only to men at the time.
