About
This 1944 photograph depicts three children tending to a school victory garden in New York City. Introduced originally at the end of World War I, victory gardens were a response to commercial crops usually meant for civilians being diverted to troops overseas. Civilians were thus encouraged to grow their own crops through community victory gardens like the one seen here. One child playfully leans forward to water a small patch of plants, while the two other children crouch beside him. In the background of the painting a gate and city street are visible.
