About
This iconic recruiting poster created by James Montgomery Flagg features “Uncle Sam”, a stern, elderly male personification of the United States, with his index finger extended out towards the viewer. Beneath him are the words “I want you for the U.S. Army,” with the “you” bolded in red. At the bottom of the image in a smaller font is printed “Nearest recruiting station”, with a blank space left below, presumably so that the address of the local recruiting station could be listed. Basing the pose off of a 1914 British propaganda poster by Alfred Leete, Flagg used himself as a model for Uncle Sam, presenting him as a robust authority figure. The extended index finger and usage of “you” places the viewer in direct relation to Uncle Sam’s demand and thus the war itself, an important tool of propaganda images at the time.
