About
This photo shows the carefully decorated great hall of the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building. The image depicts the first and second floors of the Great Hall, with stairs on two sides. An inscription atop the commemorative arch in the middle reads “Library of Congress”, and the arches on the second floor are supported by double columns. These arches’ ceilings are decorated with printer’s marks from Spain, France, the United States and Britain. On the second floor, further down the hallway leading up the stairs, is the famous Minerva mosaic by Elihu Vedder. The Roman goddess of knowledge and wisdom is portrayed holding a long, two-headed spear, illustrating that she never lets down her vigilance.
