About

This political cartoon dating from the early twentieth century, documents the struggle for women’s rights. Using the traditionally masculine pastime of baseball as the setting, two women in uniform are seen on the diamond, talking to one another. The woman in the uniform labeled “feminism” demands of the woman in the uniform labelled “suffrage” to “bean him!” or, hit him in the head. Thus the cartoon illustrates how feminism fed into women gaining the right to vote in the United States in 1920.
