Edward S. Curtis dedicated a large part of his career to documentary portraits of Native Americans. This sweeping photograph depicts Red Hawk, an Oglala warrior, atop a horse that is pausing for a drink. The Badlands offer scenic and classic American landscape views, an element Curtis often coupled with his portraits, illustrating the important relationship between humans and nature.
